NEW RELEASE! Epic Tucson

NEW RELEASE! Epic Tucson

Just in time for the start of the indoor cycling season comes our latest release, Epic Tucson! This newest of the epicRIDES series sets a new standard for virtual ride training DVDs with a TWO RIDE, TWO DVD PACKAGE!

Epic Tucson's main ride is the climb of Mt. Lemmon with three female members of the Summit Velo cycling team. This is a full 70 minute workout that will take you on a 18 mile, 4,000 foot climb along one of Tucson's touchstone rides. This ride has ever changing scenery as you gain elevation through various microenvironments on the way to the Windy Point lookout. Be ready to work (and sweat) with this one!

The second, bonus ride in this release is the loop road of Saguaro National Park - East with members of the Cactus Cycling Club. This is a 45 minute roller coaster of a workout with multiple short climb intervals and a nice 10 minute climb in the middle. The pace is fast and the gorgeous Sonoran desert scenery will literally fly by on this amazing ride.

Also included in this DVD is our first, "If you go..." section, which highlights some great Tucson area resources for cyclists, including: Lodge on the Desert, Sabino Cycles and Desert Journeys by Epic Tucson Location Producer, Jerry Rosen.

You're going to LOVE THIS DVD!

EPIC RIDER PROFILE - Mike Henderson

EPIC RIDER PROFILE - Mike Henderson

Mike Henderson is just the kind of Epic Rider we love to highlight.

Mike is a cancer survivor of over 16 years and even though he just turned 50, he still feels like he's 21!

After surviving cancer Mike decided that he needed to give back something for the life he had gained and since then he's been a enthusiastic supporter of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in their Team in Training Cycling program as a participant, as well as the MS, Diabetes, Arthritis, Cancer Societies, and Livestrong. Today, Mike is heavily involved with the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).

Last year Wenzel Coaching asked Mike if he would like to join their organization. With so many new riders looking to complete their first century, improve their Time Trial time or just wanting to loose weight via cycling, they thought Mike's background would be ideal.

Mike has used stationary training for many, many years and found it an essential part of his annual training program. When the weather is bad, which isn't often in Southern California, he can still get those miles in. Stationary training also allows him to focus on very specific areas like strength, power, intensity and endurance without the distractions of cars, people or stop lights. He feels he can actually spend less time on the bike and get more accomplished. In Mike's words,  "One hour of stationary training is, depending on intensity, between one hour and fifteen to one and half hours on the road."

Mike is an enthusiastic user of epicRIDES for training. When he first came across our DVD series he was surprised at how different these training DVDs where compared to others in his selection and immediately ordered the annual subscription.

Mike likes the entire epicRIDES package. "I like the concept which is straight forward and provides that feeling of going for a ride just like you would if you where to head out from home. I also like the different camera viewpoints which give you a sense of realism that other DVDs just don't seem to come close to. Couple that with spectacular scenery and you can almost feel the wind in your hair," says Mike.

"Next is the music. It's upbeat without being over the top or...weird. Music is a great way to stay motivated and gives you a tempo to keep cadence with."

"Lastly, there is a display which provides a graphical representation of where you are in the ride: hill, flat, descending. I like this because I can add resistance and pick up the pace just like the riders in the video. I also can change resistance to meet my training needs so the same DVD can be a challenge or more of a noodle ride."

Even though Mike lives in San Diego where one can practically ride 365 days a year, he find stationary a necessary part of his busy life. Even when he travels he takes EpicRides with him to use in the hotel gym on his notebook computer.

For riders that he coaches, Mike always recommend stationary riding as a regular part of their schedule. In Mike's own words, "epicRIDES makes it that much more challenging and enjoyable when you are relegated to staying inside."

Two Thumbs Up from Morro Bay Chuck!

Two Thumbs Up from Morro Bay Chuck!

An Epic Ride
by Morro Bay Chuck

The other night I had the opportunity to get on my Spinner NXT and pop in a DVD and transport myself instantly to Acadia National Park in Maine.

epicPLANET.tv's Epic Acadia was not just a leisurely cruise through the park, this was a real bike ride through some incredible country. Rolling hills, a nice long climb at the end and a nice long downhill into town.

One of the things I really liked was that there were various camera angles so it never got boring. My favorite angle was the one from behind that appeared to show your own handlebars in the foreground. It really made you feel like you were right there on the road. Also provided was a cool dashboard that showed you elapsed time, the ride profile and even showed your progress through the ride. The timer allowed you at all times to see how long to the finish of the segment and the finish of the ride.

The ride itself was challenging. After a somewhat level warmup, a series of rolling hills led to a long climb which really kicked my butt. The scenery of course was spectacular and beautifully photographed. I wasn't wild about the music, but it is very easy to just turn the volume down and play your own sound tracks. As in indoor cycling, every instructor has their own preference in music.

From start to finish this was a professional production which gave you a great sense of being there. I can't wait to find a way to try it out in a Spin class.
